In Season 3 of Weeds, Nancy's gangster mentor U-Turn imparts an important lesson when he tells her, "Thug means never having to say you're sorry."
For Mark Cuban, this isn't necessarily the case.
Yesterday, Mark used his blog to apologize to Kenyon Martin's mom Lydia Moore for telling her that her son was a thug. And a punk. (Like any hot blooded American sports team owner, he got swept up and carried away by the madness of the drunk, angry fans who were slinging insults at the opposing players.) In his Mea culpa to both Lydia and KMart, Mark writes:
When tempers and such start impacting the fan experience both in Dallas and Denver, and it requires special security, that's not what I want for Mavs or Nuggets fans. No one takes more abuse and gets more threats on the road than I do. So I know exactly how it feels. I've also had my family and friends spit on at games in this series. So I know how unpleasant that is as well. It's a dirty secret that all arenas need to do a better job of protection for visiting team fans, particularly during the playoffs.
So at this point I would like to apologize to you and your mom KMart for my comment. I should have not said anything and I was wrong. Hopefully you will accept the apology and we can move on.
But Mark didn't just apologize and leave it at that. He went so far as to extend an invitation to KMart, his mother and the family members of other Nuggets to come stay with him in his private suite in Dallas. Hard to imagine Lydia refusing that offer. You know, his having insulted her son like that and all. But Mark insists that there is no better way to heal old wounds than to spend this kind of quality time with one another. He says:
Its amazing how tempers mellow when real people talk to each other and realize that it's still just a game.
Right. And if anyone realizes that it's still "just a game," it's definitely Mark Cuban.
