At about noon today, the news was out that Dodgers slugger Manny Ramirez had been suspended for 50 games for his use of performance enhancing drugs. It hadn't been an hour before the twittersphere was all atweet with the twitters of tweetering jocks who either wanted to weigh in on the subject or simply spread the news.
At about 12:15, almost immediately after the story broke, Jose Canseco tweets:
Manny Ramirez tests positive for performance enhancing drugs and has been suspended by MLB for 50 games.
Retired NBA'er Jalen Rose tweets:
Shocked that the LA Dodgers Slugger Manny Ramirez has been suspended 50 games for using performance enhancing drugs! Wowow."
Shortly thereafter, Jalen follows up with:
What do u think about the steroids era in Baseball?...and would u use performance enhancing drugs if it helped make u a pro athlete?"
Kevin Love was completely aghast by the news, as indicated by his excessive use of questions marks when he tweets:
Manny Ramirez out 50 games??? steroid use??? wow...I'm going to the game on saturday too. Bummer.
(Presumably not seeing Manny this Saturday would be among the smaller disappoints on Kevin's list this spring. Seeing as that he plays for the Timberwolves and all.) Kevin does make a point of adding several minutes later, "I still think Manny is Great for the sport...regardless."
Giants pitcher Barry Zito reveals to the world the depths of his Machiavellian nature when he tweets:
Manny's gone for 50 games. time for the Giants to capitalize.
Owner of the Dallas Mavericks Mark Cuban brings the conversation back to another infamous juicer when he tweets:
Think ARod is sending Manny a thank you note for taking over the sports pages?
But it's Shaq -- often a bigger fan of noises than words -- who pretty much sums up the general sentiment when he tweets:
Damn manny ramirez, come on man Agggggggggh, agggggggh, agggggh.
Penalties getting stiffer. Next step will be to ban players for life. Will even that be enough to regain some balance in pro sports? Doubtful. The money machine will always find new players to grind up, creating pretend heroes, then playing "shocked" when they fall. It's the fans who will get sick of the corruption, and eventually ticket receipts will drop, the sales impact of players endorsements' will fall off.
Is anybody following those numbers?
