John Thornton: “I Love Favre But…”

Yesterday, Brett Favre went on Joe Buck Live, where he finally unveiled his plans for the future.  (And by finally, we mean FINALLY.)  In short, assuming his arm is healthy, he'll be bound for Minnesota.

John Thornton, for one, is not impressed.  He writes:

I would hate to be a Minnesota Viking player right now.  Coaches have been preaching TEAM all off-season, trusting each other, working out together, and developing camaraderie that will carry players past the summer and into the season.  But all along they were courting QB Brett Favre.

As far as the wisdom of this particular courtship is concerned, mark John down as skeptical:

Is Favre a better option than those two QB's?  Probably so.  But remember, Favre was a better option than New York Jets QB Chad Pennington last summer too.  The Jets season ended horribly and Chad Pennington ended up leading the Miami Dolphins to the playoffs.  This better work out in Viking land or heads will roll just like they did in New York.

Still, despite his apparent lack of faith in Favre, John tries to drive home the point  that this his issue is not with Favre's choice to forge on as a football player or with the Vikings'  willingness to help him.   John's beef is with Favre's noncommittal approach to the matter.

I love Favre, I love his hustle and drive to continue to play football.  But at some point he is going to have to let his teammates know early on if he is going to be their QB.  Waiting until the summer isn't cool.  All players would love to be able to skip off-season workouts and show up in July, but players also get jealous of the guy who actually gets to do it.

But, then, all players would also love corn mazes somewhere in Iowa that are haped like them.  However, not all players are Brett Favre.
