In his most recent entry on his blog, Dwight Howard doesn’t address this week’s Sports Illustrated cover story on him — “Too Much Fun? Can The Magic’s Dunk Machine Get Serious For A Moment?’ — but he does point out that The Magic haven’t suffered too much on account of all of that fun he’s been having.
The S.I. article touches on the questions whether Dwight's good nature and propensity for joking around — his lack of edge — hinders his ability to maximize his full potential. (Among other things, the story discusses the implementation of a “no-flatulence rule” by coach Stan Van Gundy — brought on by no other than the Dunk Machine himself. According to Rashard Lewis, “Dwight really likes to cut the cheese.”)
Dwight blogs, “I promised myself and my teammates that I would be better defensively this season and I went out and led the NBA in blocks. That’s just proof that when you put your mind to something you can accomplish it.”
That said, Popeye once espoused, “I yam what I yam.” And like Popeye, Dwight isn’t afraid to be what he is. And, at the end of the day, he’s a guy who likes to have fun (something Nate Robinson should be thankful for). He wraps up his blog entry with his favorite memory of the season:
“I have one that I still think is the absolutely funniest of the year. It was a couple of weeks ago against Cleveland when Marcin Gortat became the first Polish player in the history of basketball since James Naismith to hit a 3-pointer. Now that was a sight to see. That’s one for the historians and record books all time.”
Guess you had to be there.
